The alternator powers the AC, and it draws energy from the engine. Obviously, you need fuel for the engine to operate, as it’s the main source of energy for your car. How Does Car AC Work?
Essentially, the AC system in your vehicle works the same as it does in all other gasoline-powered vehicles around Inglewood and Santa Monica. The AC runs on refrigerant – a high-pressure gas. All AC systems use the following components to cool your vehicle on a warm day:
- Compressor — compresses the refrigerant into a fluid, allowing it to flow down a line to the condenser
- Condenser — gets rid of the heat from the refrigerant and moves it to the expansion valve or orifice tube
- Expansion valve or orifice tube — changes the refrigerant back to its gaseous state before transferring the gas to the receiver/drier or accumulator
- Receiver/drier or accumulator — takes moisture out of the refrigerant before sending it to the evaporator
- Evaporator — takes the heat out of the air passing through its core before sending it into the refrigerant, which results in cold air flowing beyond the evaporator
Can Using Car AC Be Fuel-Efficient?
Are there times when it is more efficient to use your AC than to avoid using it? Absolutely! If you are driving at highway speeds, it is more efficient to use the AC than to open the windows. Why? Open windows create more drag, and this in turn requires the engine to work harder and waste fuel.
