Collision Repair FAQ

How Much Does a Headlight or Taillight Replacement Cost?

If your vehicle’s headlight or taillight is cracked, dim, or completely out, it’s more than just a cosmetic issue—it’s a safety concern and a potential legal violation, especially in a high-traffic city like Los Angeles. But how much should you expect to pay for a headlight or taillight replacement?

The cost of replacing a light can vary widely based on several factors, including your vehicle make and model, the type of lighting system, and whether you’re replacing just the bulb or the entire assembly.

Average Costs for Headlight and Taillight Replacements

For many standard vehicles, replacing a simple halogen bulb is inexpensive. However, if your vehicle uses LEDs, HIDs (High-Intensity Discharge lights), or adaptive lighting systems, the cost can rise significantly.

Taillight replacements are in a similar range. A basic taillight bulb might be inexpensive, but if the damage involves the full taillight housing, wiring, or integrated sensors, the price could go much higher.

Factors That Affect Headlight and Taillight Replacement Costs

  1. Make and Model: Luxury and newer vehicles tend to have more complex lighting systems, which are more expensive to repair or replace.
  2. Technology: If your headlights have advanced features like automatic dimming, they are more costly to repair.
  3. Extent of Damage: Just replacing a bulb costs far less than repairing cracked lenses, damaged wiring, or moisture-intrusion issues.
  4. OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts usually cost more than aftermarket alternatives, but they may be required for warranty or insurance reasons. We only use OEM parts at Eli’s.
