How to Fill Windshield Wiper Fluid

Having a clear windshield is crucial for safe driving around Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. It is also important to have enough windshield wiper fluid to keep your view ahead crystal clear. If you are wondering how to refill windshield wiper fluid, you may also be wondering where to put windshield wiper fluid. In the guide below from Eli’s Collision Repair, we cover all of this and more.

What is Windshield Wiper Fluid?

Windshield wiper fluid is a cleaning fluid specifically formulated to clean car windshield glass. Usually, it is made up of ethanol or methanol. It also generally contains a small amount of ethylene glycol (an alcohol used in automotive antifreeze) to prevent freezing at temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

If you’ve shopped for windshield wiper fluid around Inglewood or Santa Monica, you may wonder why there are so many different options available. Does it matter what windshield wiper fluid you use? It depends on where you live. If you live in an area where the weather fluctuates dramatically between seasons, you may want to choose a product that has been optimized for the changes in the weather. These wiper fluids come with additives like antifreeze or rain repellant for the best possible performance.

How to Use Windshield Wiper Fluid

Most vehicles have a button on the windshield wiper lever that releases wiper fluid. When you notice a buildup on your windshield, press the lever. The wiper blades will swipe automatically to clean the glass.

Where to Put Windshield Wiper Fluid

Not sure where to put windshield wiper fluid? That’s ok! Follow these steps to refill your windshield wiper fluid in no time.

  1. Locate the washer fluid reservoir. The front/rear washer fluid reservoir is a translucent container with a windshield/water symbol. Typically, you will find it near the engine. If you are unsure of its location, consult your owner’s manual.
  2. Remove the reservoir cap to see how much wiper fluid it contains.
  3. Carefully add fluid into the reservoir without overfilling it. We recommend using a funnel to prevent splashing.
  4. Put the reservoir cap back into place.
