Should My Windshield Be Repaired or Replaced?

If you have noticed a crack in your windshield, you may be wondering if it can simply be repaired or if a replacement is necessary. This is a common question we hear at Eli’s Collision Repair, as it is important to address a cracked windshield as soon as possible to prevent it from getting worse. It is also unsafe to drive with a cracked windshield around Beverly Hills and downtown LA. Keep in mind that in some cases, a cracked windshield may be covered under a comprehensive insurance plan.

So, when should you repair or replace a windshield? Read on to find out.

Windshield Repair vs. Replacement

When to repair your windshield:

  • The damage will not diminish the safety of the vehicle if it is involved in a collision around Inglewood.
  • The crack is shorter than 12 inches or the chip or bullseye is smaller than 1 inch.
  • The crack or chip is far enough away from the margin of the glass.
  • There is only damage to the outer layer of the glass.

When to replace your windshield:

  • The damage impairs driver visibility.
  • The inner layer of the glass is also damaged.
  • The damage is located near the corner or edge of the windshield.
  • The crack is longer than 14 inches or the chip or bullseye is larger than 3 inches.

Why Repair or Replace Your Windshield?

Repairing your windshield can take as little as 30 minutes if the damage is minimal. It is usually pretty affordable, too. A well-repaired windshield should thoroughly restore the durability and visibility of the windshield to nearly like-new condition. In most cases, insurance companies prefer windshield repair over replacement.

Replacing your windshield may be necessary if damage is extensive. Replacement can take approximately three hours if the correct windshield is in stock. While windshield replacement is the more expensive option, it is also the safest.
