Auto Frame Repair and Replacement

Aluminum frames are becoming increasingly popular in modern vehicles due to their lightweight and durable properties. While they improve fuel efficiency and performance, aluminum frames require specialized techniques and tools for proper repair. At Eli’s Collision Repair in Los Angeles, we have the expertise and equipment necessary to handle aluminum frame repair or replacement with precision and care.

Why Aluminum Frames Require Specialized Repairs

Aluminum behaves differently than steel under stress. It doesn’t buckle in the same way, and it’s more prone to cracking or tearing during a collision. Additionally, aluminum doesn’t retain its original strength once damaged unless repaired properly. For these reasons, working on aluminum frames requires skilled technicians with advanced training and tools specifically designed for aluminum repair or replacement.

Aluminum Bonding

Aluminum bonding is a process that now replaces some repairs that used to need welding. Not all facilities are aware of this unless they are certified by the manufacturers like Eli’s. This method is used with advanced bonding adhesives and specialty rivets that are required and provided by the manufacturer.

The process usually begins with placing the vehicle in need of repair on a dedicated frame machine. Aluminum repairs also require a dedicated clean room for this process. After cleaning and preparing the aluminum surfaces to ensure a strong bond, the manufacturer-recommended adhesives are applied. The parts are secured with bonding and rivets, then the vehicle is left untouched and in position for 24-48 hours to ensure the adhesive cures properly. Aluminum bonding is a precise and durable solution, ensuring the repaired components maintain their structural integrity, performance, and safety.

The Aluminum Frame Repair Process

  1. Thorough Inspection and Diagnostics
The first step in aluminum frame repair is a detailed inspection. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we assess the frame for bends, buckles, cracks, and structural damage to ensure no issues are overlooked. We also determine if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
  2. Specialized Aluminum Welding
Aluminum requires a different welding process compared to steel. At Eli’s Collision Repair, our technicians are trained in TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding, which is ideal for aluminum repairs. This method allows for precise control and ensures the welded areas regain their original strength. We also use dedicated aluminum workstations to avoid contamination from steel, which can compromise the integrity of the repair.
  3. Frame Straightening and Reshaping
Unlike steel, aluminum has a limited tolerance for bending and cannot be stretched back into place. With specialized equipment, our skilled technicians carefully replace the damaged areas to restore the frame to its original dimensions without compromising its structural integrity.
  4. Panel and Component Replacement
In cases where sections of the aluminum frame are too severely damaged to repair, we replace them with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. This ensures that the repaired frame meets the manufacturer’s standards for safety and performance.
  5. Precision Measurement and Alignment
After repairs or replacements, we use computerized alignment systems to verify that the frame matches the vehicle’s original specifications. Accurate alignment is crucial to ensure proper handling, even tire wear, and the functionality of advanced safety systems.
