Tips for Avoiding Car Accidents in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is known worldwide as a city on wheels. To get to most destinations in the LA metro area, you need a car, and every time you drive, you expose yourself to the risk of a car accident. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to make accidents less likely.

Stay in Your Lane

Whether it’s on the 405, the 101, the 5, or any LA highway, lane surfers are a common sight. These reckless drivers zip from lane to lane, weaving around cars to shave seconds off their journey. Every time you make a lane change, you take on a small amount of risk; maybe there’s a car in your blind spot, or maybe the car in front of you will decelerate suddenly while you’re not looking.

The simple solution: if you don’t have to change lanes, then don’t. Chill out, turn up your music or podcast, and don’t worry about arriving at your destination three minutes later than you would have if you’d surfed lanes.

Let It Go

Not only does reckless driving cause accidents, but so does road rage. If a driver does something stupid like cutting you off or using the shoulder as another lane, take a breath and let it go. No matter what, do not use your vehicle to “teach them a lesson.” Stay cool; they’re much more likely to get into an accident than you.

Know Your Directions

Highway driving in LA can be a confusing tangle of directions. Lanes appear and disappear, and roads split in two. There’s nothing more heart-stopping than being caught in the wrong lane and realizing you need to get four lanes over, especially on the famous 101-5-10 interchange south of downtown.

Knowing your lanes far in advance is the best way to avoid this problem. Memorize your daily commute so you’re in the correct lane miles ahead of the interchange. Accidents happen when drivers get flustered and make sudden turns. Save yourself some stress by knowing your LA directions backwards and forwards.

Even if you do your due diligence, accidents can still happen. If you do end up in a fender bender or more serious collision, you can take your car to an auto body shop like Eli’s Collision Repair. With six locations all over the LA metro area, including Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, we can handle dents, paint scratches, and all kinds of auto body work. While three of our locations perform repairs, all six locations are open for pickup and drop-off, so you can take your vehicle to whichever location is closest and most convenient. Give us a call if your car has been damaged in an accident; we’ll handle the rest.
