What is Automotive Service Excellence Certification?

If you were involved in an accident in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills, you want to bring your vehicle to a certified repair center to ensure it’s repaired correctly for greater peace of mind. One of the many certifications you should look for when searching for a body shop is an ASE certification. ASE certification stands for Automotive Service Excellence and was created by the ASE non-profit organization in 1972. The ASE certification exists to ensure automotive technicians are properly trained to handle a wide range of repairs. Learn more about the ASE certification process and how repair centers become ASE certified below, then get a free repair estimate online from Eli’s Collision Repair — an ASE certified repair center!

What is ASE Certification?

As we mentioned above, ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence and is given to an automotive technician who has completed the required training and met their Automotive Service Excellence Certified Master Technicians requirements. The ASE certification signifies that a technician is qualified to work on all the mechanical, electrical, and other system components in a vehicle. To qualify for an ASE certification, technicians must have met the following criteria:

  • 2-years of experience in the automotive repair industry or one-year of on the job training with a bachelor’s degree in automotive repairs.
  • Complete and pass the specialty examination, which is offered twice a year.

Once technicians have met these preliminary requirements, they can choose the type of ASE certification they would like to receive. They can become certified in brakes, heating and cooling, suspensions, and many other areas.

When a technician has completed their ASE certification, they can apply to be an ASE Master Mechanic. To become an ASE Master Certified Mechanic, technicians must pass a series of exams on various specialties including:

  • Collision repair
  • Engine mechanics
  • Medium truck repair
  • Heavy truck repair
  • Truck Equipment
  • School Buses
  • Various forms of transit buses

Every ASE Master Certified Mechanic or ASE certified technician must retake their exams every five years to maintain their certification.

How Does a Business Get ASE Certified?

In order for a business to display the blue and white ASE certified seal, they must have at least one automotive technician with an ASE certification. An ASE certification is meant to give the customer of a repair shop greater peace of mind knowing that their vehicle is being repaired by an individual with extensive knowledge of their car and its systems. As such, customers have a right to know which mechanic has received the ASE certification and they can request the services of that mechanic for their vehicle. It’s common for drivers choosing an automotive repair center in South Bay to mistake the ASE seal to mean that every mechanic at the shop is ASE certified. When you’re getting estimates from a repair center, make sure to ask who is ASE certified and request for those technicians to work on your vehicle.
