What to Do in the First 24 Hours After a Car Accident

A car accident, even a minor one, is a jarring experience. In the moments and hours that follow, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure of your next steps. Having a clear plan in place before an accident happens can make an enormous difference in protecting your health, your legal standing, and your vehicle. Here’s a practical guide to the first 24 hours after a car accident.

At the Scene: Prioritize Safety First

The moment a collision occurs, move your vehicle out of traffic if it is safe to do so and turn on your hazard lights. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately; do not attempt to move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger.

Even if everyone appears uninjured, call the police. A formal police report creates an official record of the incident that can prove invaluable during the insurance claims process. While you wait, stay calm and avoid discussing fault with the other driver.

Gather Information Thoroughly

Once immediate safety is addressed, collect as much information as possible. This includes the other driver’s name, contact information, license plate number, driver’s license number, and insurance details. Note the make, model, and color of all vehicles involved, and record the names and contact information of any witnesses.

Document everything with your phone camera. Photograph all vehicles from multiple angles, the surrounding scene, road conditions, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. The more documentation you have, the stronger your position will be when dealing with insurance companies.

Notify Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible, ideally while still at the scene or within a few hours of the accident. Most policies require prompt notification, and delaying the call can complicate your claim. Provide your insurer with an accurate, factual account of what happened. Avoid speculating about fault or minimizing damage that you aren’t yet sure about.

Watch for Delayed Symptoms

Adrenaline is a powerful thing. In the hours following an accident, injuries that weren’t immediately apparent — whiplash, soft tissue damage, concussion — can begin to surface. If you experience any pain, stiffness, headaches, or disorientation in the hours after a collision, seek medical attention promptly. Documenting injuries early also creates an important medical record if a claim becomes necessary.

Get Your Vehicle to a Certified Shop

Within 24 hours, arrange to have your vehicle inspected by a certified collision repair shop, even if the damage looks minor. As we’ve discussed, visible damage is often just the beginning of the story. A professional inspection will identify the full extent of what needs to be repaired and give you an accurate picture of the costs before your insurance claim moves forward.

At Eli’s Collision Repair, we’re here to help you navigate the aftermath of an accident with clarity and confidence. From the initial inspection to the final detail, our team handles your vehicle with the care it deserves.
